Bellarabi saves Leverkusen at the last second

Hannover 96 has set the coaching discussion rolling again at Bayer Leverkusen. The team from Lower Saxony fought their way to a deserved point in a 2:2 (1:1) basement duel against the opponent from fear, but remained in the 17th away game in a row without three players and on the relegation spot. Karim Bellarabi (90.+4) saved Bayer with his late goal at least one point.

The self-proclaimed candidate for the Champions League, Bayer, who had won all of his previous ten home games against Niedersachsen, will remain in the lower league after his second home game in a row without a win. The pressure on the controversial 04 coach Heiko Herrlich should increase again after only two wins from eight league games.

In Hannover, on the other hand, the partial success was to be followed by a period of calm, after coach Andre Breitenreiter had already been criticised for his poor start to the season.

U-20 international Florent Muslija (25), with a superb free-kick, and Felipe (54), who saw a yellow-red card four minutes after his goal, scored the goals for Lower Saxony, who had lost all their previous ten guest appearances under the Bayer Cross and remained without a win away for the 17th time in a row. Bayer captain Lars Bender (34) had scored the 1:1 victory in the meantime. Wendell missed a penalty in the seventh minute for Bayer.

At the dress rehearsal for the away match in the Europa League next Thursday at FC Zurich (18.55/DAZN), Bayer again showed more shadow than light. After a good start, the home side were able to take the ball down after Wendell’s missed shot at the latest. The Brazilian failed from the point with a very weak penalty shot to 96 goalkeeper Michael Esser. Referee Patrick Ittrich (Hamburg) had only punished Felipe’s handball after consulting the video assistant. Esser had already fended off a penalty kick from Wendell on the last matchday of last season’s 2-3 defeat in Leverkusen.

A standard 96-youngster Muslija, who had already attracted attention during the week with a dream free-kick to 3:0 in the 3:2 of the German U20 against Switzerland, did better. In the 30th minute, Finnish national goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky prevented the 0:2 with a brilliant parade against the outstanding Muslija. Only five minutes later, Lars Bender equalised after a goal from Niclas Füllkrug had not been acknowledged on the other side.

Even after the break, Leverkusen did not find a suitable way to undermine the well-organised defence of the Reds in an interesting game. A harmless long-range shot by Kai Havertz (51.) and half-chances by Julian Brandt (53.) and Dominik Kohr (60.) were the poor results of the Bayer offensive in the second round. Hanover, on the other hand, used his few counterattacks by Felipe, who then weakened his team himself.
